General Description

Here's an exceptionally low-spreading or cascading Apache beggarticks cultivar that's perfect for hanging baskets, groundcover or to spill over the edge of a large patio container. A short-lived perennial, often grown as an annual, 'Peters Goldteppich' was discovered growing in Peter Wicki-Freidl's Swiss garden in 1996. The plant species is from the southwestern United States and Mexico but prized as an ornamental in gardens worldwide. Peter's Gold Carpet (the literal translation of the cultivar from German) is early flowering and holds the five-petaled blooms on stems above the foliage. This plant is heat-loving and has fern-like, deep green foliage. From early summer to fall it becomes adorned with a showy display of many bright yellow daisies. These are attractive to bees and butterflies and require little deadheading. Blossoms smell faintly of honey.

A tough plant for sunny sites, Peters Gold Carpet Apache beggarticks grows best in average to very fertile soil that's moist but well drained. It tolerates summer heat and moderate drought. It is perfect for sunny containers, hanging baskets, mixed border foregrounds or rock gardens. If this spreading cultivar grows out of control, trim it back hard and let it rejuvenate. Extremely cold winters kill Apache beggarticks, but it still makes a worthwhile annual.
