General Description

The Solaire® Series of Apache beggarticks is a collection of the most compact varieties bred for container culture. While this species is usually a short-lived, spreading perennial, often grown as an annual, members in the Solaire® Series perform as annuals, dying out after about a year even if ideal growing conditions prevail. Plants are mounds of fine-textured, deep green leaves. From early summer to fall's first frost, yellow to gold flowers delicately float on stems above the foliage.

Apache beggarticks is native to the southwestern United States and adjacent Mexico. Cultivars in the Solaire® Series were bred in The Netherlands for use as annuals in patio containers or small-size garden beds. The most famous selection in the series is Solaire® Yellow, with its starry, five-petaled bright yellow blossoms. The flowers are attractive to bees and butterflies and require little or no deadheading for reblooming to occur. A faint smell of honey may be detected on open flowers, too. Solaire® beggarticks are greenhouse propagated by stem cuttings, not by seed.

Excellent in sunny garden sites, Solaire® beggarsticks grow best in moist but well-drained soils that are average to very fertile. High summer temperatures and a moderate drought are readily tolerated. They are perfect for small-size containers, foreground border edges or rock gardens.
