Botanical Name
Bougainvillea 'Monan'(TAHITIAN DAWN®)
Plant Common Name
Bougainvillea, Paperflower, Tahitian Dawn Bougainvillea
General Description
The orange hued flowers of Tahitian Dawn® age to rosy-mauve. This tough tropical vine offers superb hot color to arid frost free gardens or greenhouses.
Bougainvilleas are the ornamental hallmark of Hawaii, Mexico and California but thrive in dry climates around the world. The parent species to all bougie hybrids are native to South America.
This large woody twining vine produces long arching branches decked with dark evergreen leaves. Tiny tubular flowers are flanked by colorful orange and rose floral bracts that stay bright and showy for a long time. The blooms are pollinated by hummingbirds and butterflies.
All Bougainvillea require full sun and average to poor porous soil. They bloom far more heavily when conditions are dry. If overwatered, even in the desert, they produce too much foliage and the bracts have insufficient color. Established plants have a large fibrous root system and resent disturbance. When transplanting container-grown plants take care to keep their root balls intact.
This is the queen of climbers for walls, fences, arbors, shade structures and gazebos. Bougainvillea climb onto roofs or into tree tops.
