General Description
This rare, golden flowered bougainvillea adds vibrant color to frost-free gardens and conservatories. Their twining branches of this woody vine are lined with dark green leaves that remain evergreen unless persistent drought causes them to drop. The burnished golden blooms have bracts (modified petal-like leaves) that become flushed with pink depending on exposure or season. The colorful bracts are long-lasting and surround tiny, white tubular flowers, which are pollinated by hummingbirds and long-tongued insects.
Like most bougainvilleas, 'Enid Lancaster' blooms most heavily when conditions are hot and dry. If over-watered, even in the desert, it produces too much foliage and insufficient color. It has a large fibrous root system that resents disturbance, so keep the rootball in tact when planting nursery stock. Established specimens are a challenge to transplant, so most opt to replant with new stock instead.
This is a queen of climbers, happy on walls, fences, arbors, shade structures, gazebos and even thrives climbing onto roofs or into tree tops.
