Botanical Name

Bougainvillea x buttiana 'Mahara Roseville'

Plant Common Name

Bougainvillea, Double Orange Bougainvillea, Mahara Roseville Bougainvillea

General Description

A rare double bloom gives this hybrid bougainvillea, ‘Mahara Roseville,’ huge visual appeal up close. It is equally striking from far away due to its enormous size and spectacular color. Bougainvillea is a hallmark of frost-free regions in Mexico and California but can be found thriving in warm climates around the world. The parent species are native to South America where various colors and forms were bred early on to create our garden varieties. A large woody, evergreen,vine-like plant, it produces long arching branches decked with dark green leaves.

The double (extra petals) flowers of 'Mahara Roseville' are orange and add texture to the vine. The flowers have another feature: the depth of their color varies, giving them a distinct iridescence. What’s more, ‘Mahara Roseville’ is a heavy bloomer, capable of reblooming yearround in mild climates. As one flush of bloom expires and falls to the ground, the litter can be heavy, a nuisance to some gardeners. The color of the flower is not from petals but from bracts, which are modified leaves and thus are far more plentiful than the tiny tubular flowers clustered among them. They are pollinated by hummingbirds and long-tongued insects.

Like all bougainvilleas, ‘Mahara Roseville’ grows and blooms best in full sun and well-drained, even slightly dry, soil, and blooms most heavily when conditions are dry. If over-watered, even in the desert, it will produce more foliage and less color. It has a large fibrous root system that resents disturbance, so when planting a nursery purchase, keep the rootball intact. This a queen of climbers for walls, fences, arbors, shade structures, gazebos, and even thrives climbing onto roofs or into treetops.
