Plant Common Name
Bougainvillea, Hybrid Bougainvillea
General Description
Hybrid Bougainvillea is a vigorous, woody, evergreen climber with sharp thorns and large, green, heart-shaped leaves. It was produced from the cross of Bougainvillea glabra and Bougainvillea peruviana. It is admired primarily for its abundant, colorful clusters of purple, red, hot pink or yellow bracts which are modified leaves that look like petals. The bracts surround small, cream to pink, tubular, true flowers whenever the weather is warm and dry.
Hybrid bougainvillea is typically a large plant with an open habit that requires pruning and repeated management. It can be pruned as a tree, shrub, vine or topiary. Plant Bougainvillea in full sun and fertile, well-drained garden soil. Too much water or pruning can cause it to stop flowering. Bougainvillea makes a colorful accent on walls or pergolas and may be planted as an annual or tender vine in hanging baskets or other containers.
