BRASSICA oleracea 'Bonnie Hybrid'

Image of Brassica oleracea 'Bonnie Hybrid' (Capitata Group)

Family

Brassicaceae

Botanical Name

BRASSICA oleracea 'Bonnie Hybrid'( Capitata Group)

Plant Common Name

Bonnie Hybrid Cabbage, Cabbage

General Description

Productive in cool weather, 'Bonnie Hybrid' yields large cabbage heads that are resistant to Fusarium yellows and tolerant of black rot. Maturing about 75 days after planting from seedlings, 'Bonnie Hybrid' forms volleyball-sized heads with spreading, leathery, blue-green outer leaves and tightly packed, yellowish blue-green inner leaves. Flavor is robust and slightly sweet. Expect each mature cabbage head to weigh between 5 and 7 pounds (2 to 4 kg). Heads resist splitting.

Typically grown as an annual, cabbage is a cool-season short-lived perennial that originates from the coastal areas of western and southern Europe. Although cool weather enhances flavor, plants may flower (or "bolt") following extended chilly spells. Due to its cold hardiness and love of cool weather, cabbage is best grown as a spring or fall crop in warm temperate regions. Where summers are cool, it can be planted as a summer crop, and in subtropical areas it can be grown in winter.

Plant in full sun and fertile, organic-rich garden soil with ample drainage for best growth. Sow cabbage seed or plant transplants in early spring or in summer for fall for winter harvest. Plants may a produce a second crop of side sprouts from the "stumps" of the harvested heads.

Cabbages are rewarding to grow and well worth the effort. As with all members of Brassica oleracea, they are susceptible to a number of pests, including cabbage loopers and several other types of caterpillars.
