Botanical Name

BRASSICA oleracea 'Chidori White'( Acephala Group, CHIDORI SERIES)

Plant Common Name

Chidori White Ornamental Kale, Ornamental Kale

General Description

Bringing bold texture and white and green color to the garden in the frosty fall, winter and spring seasons, ‘Chidori’ White ornamental kale was bred for showy color from plants native to the coastal regions of southern and western Europe. It is a short-lived hardy perennial typically grown as an annual.

The grayed, light, green-blue leaves form a low rosette. As temperatures cool, the foliage develops creamy white colors, concentrated in the central new foliage. In the second year, the plants produce sprays of four-petalled lemon yellow flowers in spring or early summer.

Grow 'Chidori White' in full to partial sun and fertile, organic-rich garden soil with ample drainage. To grow it from seeds, sow in early spring before temperatures heat up or in fall six weeks prior to the last frost. Fall-grown crops taste better if harvested after frost. Approximately 30 days is required for harvest of the leaves for eating, but most will have a tougher texture and stronger flavor than traditional edible cabbages.

Best when viewed from above, ‘Chidori White’ makes an ideal companion for asters, pansies and mums in the autumn garden, and violas and spring bulbs in late winter and spring. Though it can survive sub-freezing temperatures, very cold nights eventually kill the plant to the root, resulting in rotting of the entire plant. Chilly temperatures are required for the leaves to develop their colors. Otherwise they can remain a solid blue-green.
