Botanical Name

BRASSICA oleracea 'Dynasty White'( Acephala Group, DYNASTY SERIES)

Plant Common Name

Dynasty White Ornamental Kale, Ornamental Kale

General Description

To bring texture and color to the garden in the frosty fall, winter and spring seasons, ‘Dynasty Rose’ ornamental kale was bred for showy leaves from plants native to the coastal regions of southern and western Europe. It is a short-lived hardy perennial that is typically grown as an annual.

The light green, silvery leaves are waxy, fleshy and edible, and grow in a rosette. As temperatures cool, the leaves develop a white color, especially in the central new foliage and in the veins. In the second year, the plants produce sprays of four-petalled lemon yellow flowers in spring or early summer.

Grow 'Dynasty White' in full to partial sun and fertile, organic-rich garden soil with ample drainage. To grow from seeds, sow in early spring before temperatures heat up or in fall six weeks prior to the last frost. Fall-grown crops taste better if harvested after frost. Approximately 30 days is required until harvest of the leaves for the table, but most will have a tougher texture and stronger flavor than traditional edible cabbage.

Best when viewed from above, ‘Dynasty White’ makes an ideal companion to asters, pansies and mums in the autumn garden, and violas and spring bulbs in late winter and spring. It survives subfreezing temperatures, but very cold nights can eventually kill the plant to the root, resulting in rotting of the entire plant. Chilly temperatures are required to develop full leaf color. Otherwise, the leaves can be leggy and merely a drab gray-purple.
