Brugmansia aurea
Plant Common Name
Yellow Angel's Trumpet
General Description
Prized for its huge scented flowers, this broadleaf evergreen from the northern Andes grows as a small multi-stemmed tree in the wild. Showy, trumpet-shaped, golden or white blooms dangle from its spreading branches in summer and fall. Each flower broadens at its tip into five pointed backswept lobes. The blossoms cast a heavy fragrance after dark, attracting moths and other night-flying pollinators. The large, oval, smooth or hairy leaves alternate along the stems. Mature plants bear smooth-margined leaves; young plants have toothed leaves. After pollination, the flowers give rise to prominent, spindle-shaped fruit.
Golden angel's trumpet makes a bold exuberant statement in borders or tropical container gardens. Hardy in areas such as coastal California, it prefers full sun, consistent moisture and light, and regular feeding to ensure maximum bloom production. It requires shade from the blistering midday sun of desert climates. Plants will defoliate if exposed to frost. In colder zones, they are easily grown in containers and overwintered indoors. Angel’s trumpets are easily propagated from air layering or cuttings from mature wood.
