BUDDLEJA davidii 'Adokeep'( ADONIS BLUE™, ENGLISH BUTTERFLY™ SERIES) PPAF
This entry has yet to be reviewed and approved by L2G editors.
Developed by Elizabeth Keep in East Malling, England, the Buddleja cultivars in the English Butterfly™ series have a dwarf habit, dense branching and large elongated flower clusters that come in various shades.
Asian in origin, butterflybush is a sweet deciduous to semi-evergreen shrub with open, upright to arching branches lined with lance-shaped gray-green leaves. From midsummer to frost many large, elongated flowers clusters in shades of purple and blue appear. These are like manna to the butterflies that flock to sip their sweet nectar. The shrubs will flower more vigorously if spent flowerheads are removed.
This, like most Buddleja, is quite drought tolerant once established. Overall, it prefers full sun and can withstand a wide range of well-drained soils.
It is a wonderful shrub but will freely sow itself in the garden and beyond. In fact, many consider Buddleja davidii a highly invasive species to be avoided. Plant butterflybush in butterfly gardens, large containers, mixed borders and sunny foundation plantings.
Several of the cultivars in this series include Peacock™, Adonis Blue™ and Purple Emperor™.
