Family

Loganiaceae

Botanical Name

BUDDLEJA lindleyana 'Gloster'

Plant Common Name

Gloster Butterflybush, Lindley's Butterflybush

General Description

This Victorian heirloom is found at older home sites of the southeastern U.S. where the climate is mild. The extreme vigor and deer resistance of ‘Gloster,’ as well as its wide adaptability allowed it to naturalize in many woodlands of that region. The parent species is native to southeastern China and was introduced into the Carolinas over a century ago, and this selection never really caught on in gardens. This may be due to the greater success of showy Buddleia davidii cultivars with their wider color range.

An open, rangy, deciduous shrub, ‘Gloster’ has dark glossy-green leaves and a slight tendency to sucker that may be welcome because the shoots from the base of the plant can be transplanted to make new plants. This shrub has proven quite tolerant of shade, offering butterfly-luring flowers beneath high tree canopies.

Bloom runs from spring to early summer. The long clusters of narrow, tubular flowers are far larger and fuller than the species. The clusters are pendulous, much like wisteria, giving the shrub a highly decorative look in full bloom. This plant is easy to grow, fast to mature and is cast iron. It is quite drought resistant, free of pest or disease problems and takes high heat and humidity. Its ability to grow in sun or shade makes it versatile in the garden, but to appreciate its full bloom beauty, plant it as an uncrowded single specimen.
