Family

Loganiaceae

Botanical Name

BUDDLEJA lindleyana 'Miss Vicie'

Plant Common Name

Lindley's Butterflybush, Miss Vicie Butterflybush

General Description

This selection of Lindley’s butterfly bush is an heirloom found at older homesites of the southeastern U.S. along the Gulf Coast where the climate is especially mild. Its extreme vigor and deer resistance as well as widespread adaptability allowed it to naturalize in many woodlands of that region. The parent species is a native of southeastern China and was introduced over a century ago, but never really caught on in gardens. This may be due to the greater success of showy Buddleia davidii cultivars with their wider color range. A dwarf cultivar, ‘Miss Vicie’ is a third shorter than its predecessors, but retains their open. rangy habit, dark, glossy-green leaves and slight tendency to sucker (sprout shoots from its base). The shrub has proven quite tolerant of shade, offering butterfly-luring flowers beneath high tree canopies.

Showy in bloom, ‘Miss Vicie’ bears clusters of narrow, tubular, violet-colored flowers that are far larger and fuller than the species spring to early summer. The clusters are pendulous, much like wisteria, giving the shrub a highly decorative look in full bloom. This plant is easy to grow, fast to mature and is cast iron. It is quite drought-resistant, free of pest and disease problems and takes high heat and humidity. Its ability to grow in sun or shade makes it versatile in the garden, but to appreciate its full beauty, plant it as an uncrowded, single specimen.
