Family
Liliaceae
Botanical Name
Bulbine frutescens 'Hallmark'
Plant Common Name
Bulbine, Hallmark Bulbine, Hallmark Cat's Whiskers
General Description
Hallmark cat's whiskers is a tough, evergreen perennial with airy spikes of orange-yellow flowers. It originates from South Africa and has round and juicy leaves reminiscent of chives. It is low-growing plant, which spreads slowly by underground stems to form large clumps. The cultivar ‘Hallmark’ is a little more compact than standard Bulbine. It bears many tall, leafless flower stalks above the foliage. These are topped with spikes of small, star-shaped, orange flowers with masses of yellow stamens. Blooms appear throughout the year in warm climates, but are most plentiful spring through fall.
Plant 'Hallmark' in well-drained soils in full sun. It will tolerate partial shade, but will stretch and have fewer flowers in the shade. It's very drought tolerant and is best in dry locations. However, flowering is better when the plant receives an occasional watering during very dry or hot weather. Remove spent flower stalks to encourage flowering. Divide the clumps to thin the planting and for propagation. A good choice for drought-resistant, desert and rock gardens.
