BUXUS (CHICAGOLAND GREEN®)

Image of Buxus 'Glencoe' (CHICAGOLAND GREEN®)

James H. Schutte

Family

Buxaceae

Botanical Name

BUXUS 'Glencoe'(CHICAGOLAND GREEN®)

Plant Common Name

Boxwood, Chicagoland Green® Boxwood

General Description

An exceptionally cold-hardy hybrid boxwood that does well in the Upper Midwest United States as well as in other regions with harsh climates, 'Glencoe' is a dense compact evergreen shrub that eventually forms a mound twice as broad as high. The small rounded paired leaves emerge soft green and deepen to dark glossy green. They may take on a burgundy tinge in winter. Bees visit the non-showy fragrant spring flowers.

This shrub prefers moist, well drained soil and some winter protection from wind and sun. It is deer resistant and tolerates shade, wind, pollution, and slightly alkaline soil. Mulch around it to keep the shallow roots moist and cool. It responds well to pruning and works well as a hedge or in a mixed border. Watch for boxwood psyllid, a sucking insect that sometimes attacks the leaves, causing them to curl.
