General Description

The popular North Star™ boxwood, ‘Katerberg’, has a very dense globe-like habit and was developed as a sport off of the Welleri boxwood. It is an excellent broadleaf evergreen shrub with good cold hardiness. Its small leaves are glossy, leathery and are soft green when they first emerge in spring. As they age, they turn to medium to deep green, retaining that shade even in winter. Clusters of small, inconspicuous ivory flowers appear in spring. These are loved by bees and have a strong, pungent fragrance.

Selection 'Katerberg' grows best in full sun to partial shade, and tolerates a wide range of soil types, though moist fertile loam with good drainage is best. Shield this plant from the cold, drying winter winds in areas with colder winters in its hardiness range, although this selection tends to better accustomed to winter cold than others. It rarely needs pruning is excellent for a small topiary. In the landscape, it is ideal for foundations, shrub borders and low hedges.
