General Description

Common boxwood is a dense, rounded, broadleaf-evergreen shrub grown for its glossy green foliage and neat habit. Native to Europe, North Africa and Turkey, the cultivar 'Pier Cove' was selected by Wavecrest Nursery in southwestern Michigan for its faster growth rate and greater resilience to winter cold. It tolerates shearing and naturally attains an upright, rounded silhouette, sometimes looking almost column-like. Its small, dark green leaves give a sheared plant a tidy and fine texture.

Pier Cove boxwood thrives in partial sun to full shade on fertile, well-drained soil. In alkaline soils, climates with dry, hot summers, and sites in full sun this shrub will not grow or look its best. The species is only moderately cold-hardy, but 'Pier Cove' is more winter-hardy. Plants may be bothered by mites, leaf miners and nematodes (tiny root worms).

Use this boxwood shrub for specimen plants, for evergreen color in mixed borders, and for hedges: unsheared in informal landscapes or sheared in formal gardens.
