Family

Buxaceae

Botanical Name

BUXUS sempervirens 'Vardar Valley'

Plant Common Name

Common Boxwood, Vardar Valley Boxwood

General Description

The popular boxwood, ‘Vardar Valley’, has a dense rounded habit and is often flat-topped. It is an excellent broadleaf evergreen shrub with good cold hardiness. Its small leaves are glossy, leathery and are soft green when they first emerge in spring. As they age, they turn deep green with a bluish cast. Clusters of small, inconspicuous ivory flowers appear in spring. These are loved by bees and have a strong, pungent fragrance.

'Vardar Valley' prefers full sun to partial shade, and tolerates a wide range of soil types, though moist fertile loam with good drainage is best. It has good resistance to leaf miner and spider mites. Shield this plant from the cold, drying winter winds in areas with colder winters in its hardiness range. It takes well to pruning and shearing and is a favorite plant for topiary. In the landscape, it is ideal for foundations, shrub borders and hedges.
