General Description
Caladium is a tuberous tropical perennial grown for its large colorful leaves. The special 'Arno Nehrling' displays smottled leaves of white and green (often with a majority of white) with intense red veins that are nestled with a little pink.
As a general rule, caladiums prefer part sun to part shade and fertile moist soil with good drainage. They resent cool moist soil temperatures which can encourage tuber rot. Large fancy-leaved cultivars should never be exposed to full sun as this can cause burn, though the strap-leaved cultivars have been bred to better handle intense sun exposures.
Caladiums can really brighten shaded gardens and containers and combine well with many flowering plants. Where hardy, they may be grown year round though plants often go dormant where winters are dry. In temperate zones tubers can be dug in fall and stored in a cool dry place over winter, or the plants can be brought indoors as houseplants.
