General Description
Grown for their highly ornamental leaves, hybrid caladiums are tropical to subtropical tuberous perennials that offer effortless summer beauty. The cultivar 'Candidum' is a fancy-leaved type with delicate, heart-shaped, white leaves with prominent dark green veins and edges. They are borne from small, fleshy, brown tubers that are easily dug, divided and stored. Inconspicuous spathe and spadex flowers appear in summer and are concealed by the leaves.
This aroid thrives in full to part shade and prefers fertile, moist soil with good drainage. The more sun it receives, the more regular moisture it requires. If plants get too dry and sunned their leaves will scorch and turn brown along the edges. All caladiums require warm soil to emerge and thrive. If grown where winters are cold, dig the tubers in fall before the first frost and store in a cool, dry place over winter. In tropical climates, they are grown year round as perennials but tend to go dormant during cool or dry seasons.
This lovely foliage plant adds bright, neutral color and drama to a shady mixed perennial borders and containers. It also makes an excellent houseplant.
