Family

Araceae

Botanical Name

CALADIUM 'White Queen'

Plant Common Name

Angel Wings, White Queen Caladium

General Description

Caladium is a tender, shade-loving tropical perennial that’s grown for its fantastically ornamental foliage. The cultivar ‘White Queen’ is a sun-tolerant selection with white and green heart-shaped leaves. Each leaf has a red central vein and on new leaves the red color often bleeds into adjacent white areas, though mature leaves become predominantly green and white with only central veins retaining a red tint. Like most caladium, its flowers have insignificant ornamental appeal.

As a rule, caladium grows best in part sun to shade and fertile, moist soil with good drainage. It thrives in heat and resents cool temperatures and dry soil. All are borne from small, firm, fleshy tubers. In areas where they are not hardy, they can be dug up and stored in a cool dry place in the winter months.

The bright colors of Caladium add interest to shaded beds and containers. In tropical to semi-tropical areas they can be grown year-round as evergreen perennials, but plants will go dormant if conditions become too dry.
