CALLISTEPHUS chinensis 'Astoria Deep Blue'( ASTORIA SERIES)
Astoria Deep Blue Aster, China Aster
This entry has yet to be reviewed and approved by L2G editors.
Midsummer starts the pretty and copious display of hundreds of rich violet-blue daisies on the Astoria Deep Blue China aster. A bushy but sturdy-stemmed annual, it is a native of China. Green foliage is topped by yellow-centered blossoms with deep bluish violet petals, flowering a bit earlier in summer than other China asters. The large feathery flowers are held on knee-high mounding plants.
China aster can be planted in loam or sandy soil in well drained conditions and full sun. It needs long daylengths in order for flower buds to form. Do not bother to deadhead spent blossoms as 'Astoria Deep Blue' will not reflower. This plant is susceptible to yellow wilt so avoid overwatering or poorly drained soils as once leaf yellowing occurs there is no treatment. It is ideal for a cutflower or as an en massed border or container planting.
