Low and cute, the Dwarf Thousand Wonders Crimson China aster is topped with mum-like rosy magenta flowers in late summer. A dwarf mounding annual native to China this cultivar was developed by the German plant breeding company, Ernst Benary. Green foliage is accented in late summer to fall with large flattened blooms that are a deep pinkish magenta, rarely ever revealing the golden eye in the centers. The plants barely get as tall as mid-shin on the leg.
China aster can be planted in loam or sandy soil in well drained conditions and full sun. Do not bother to deadhead spent blossoms as it will not reflower; long daylengths are required for flower buds to form. This plant is susceptible to yellow wilt so avoid overwatering or poorly drained soils as once leaf yellowing occurs there is no treatment. The charming 'Dwarf Thousand Wonders Crimson' is exceptional as a tidy bedding plant, container specimen and filler as well as edging; it makes a nice cutflower even though its stems are very short.
