Lovers of cutflowers take note! The Gala Mix China aster includes a collection of upright annuals, all native to China with double (extra petals), pincushion-like blossoms. This series was developed by the German plant breeding company, Ernst Benary. Green foliage is accented by a range of colorful blooms, flowering in late summer to fall, in either yellow, lavender, purple, blue-violet, magenta, or hot pink. The plump sea urchin-like flowers with mostly hidden yellowy centers are held on thigh-high upright plants.
China aster can be planted in loam or sandy soil in well drained conditions and full sun. Do not bother to deadhead spent blossoms as it will not reflower; long daylengths are required for flower buds to form. This plant is susceptible to yellow wilt so avoid overwatering or poorly drained soils as once leaf yellowing occurs there is no treatment. The cheerful and pretty 'Gala Mix' make exceptional cutflowers with their sturdy stems. Use them as fillers in the middle depths of a mixed border or annual bed.
