Lovers of cutflowers take note! The disease-resistant Standy Carmine Red China aster is an upright annual with late summer-occurring flowers of magenta-red. A native to China with double (extra petal) blossoms, this cultivar was developed by the German plant breeding company, Ernst Benary. Green foliage grow upon upright, sturdy stems that are topped with blooms midsummer to fall. The flattened, mum-like flowers are magenta-red and have yellowy cores (tubular ray florets).
China aster can be planted in loam or sandy soil in well drained conditions and full sun. Do not bother to deadhead spent blossoms as it will not reflower; long daylengths are required for flower buds to form. This plant is less susceptible to the many disease wilts but still avoid overwatering or poorly drained soils as once leaf yellowing occurs there is no treatment. An outstanding cutflower, 'Standy Carmine Red' with its many leafy and sturdy stems. Use this disease-resitant selection freely as fillers in the middle depths of a mixed border or annual bed.
