Family

Botanical Name

CALLUNA vulgaris

Plant Common Name

Heather, Scot's Heather

General Description

Heather is a small, evergreen shrub most associated with the open, acidic moorlands of northern Europe. It has dense branches that are slender and erect. These are covered with tiny, scale-like leaves of pale gray-green to dark green. From summer to fall, it produces numerous, small, bell-shaped flowers along its stems. These may be white, red, pink or purple-red depending on the population or cultivar.

There are many heather selections that vary in bloom and foliage color, such as the copper-leaved 'Cuprea' and 'Darkstar', which has semi-double, crimson blooms.

Heather must have acid soil that is well drained, while being evenly moist and rich in organic matter. It prefers full to partial sun and is wind tolerant. This colorful shrub is highly attractive to bees and when planted in masses, creates an appealing display of fine, spiky mounds. It may also be used in containers, mixed sunny borders or rock gardens.
