Family

Theaceae

Botanical Name

CAMELLIA chekiangoleosa

Plant Common Name

Camellia, Yunnan Camellia

General Description

The Yunnan camellia bears unusual funnel-like flowers of true red to reddish pink from late fall to midwinter. This evergreen shrub to small tree is native to the forested highlands of southern China. It is less favored as a landscape ornamental when compared to the many varieties of Japanese and sasanqua camellias, but its upright, open-branching habit and fall flowers are no less attractive. In China, the ripe seeds of Yunnan camellia are pressed to yield edible oil.

The elliptical leaves of this evergreen are glossy, leathery and dark green with toothed margins. Mature specimens develop an open, spreading to upright form. Natural variants differ in height, from a low shrub to small tree. The small to medium flowers are produced singly or in pairs on slender stems. Each has waxy red petals that often overlap to create a distinctly funnel shape when viewed from the side. Shrubs bloom in fall to early winter and are pollinated by insects. ?The capsule fruits are not fully ripe until the following autumn.

Grow Yunnan camellia in partial sun to bright, dappled shade beneath taller forest trees. The soil should be moist and acid with ample drainage. This is a notoriously slow-growing ornamental, which is also shallow rooted. Protect the roots with a thick layer of organic mulch. Provide regular irrigation when dry, especially in late summer prior to the flowering season, and light applications of fertilizer during the growing months. Prune after flowering ends, just before growth starts in spring. This large and open-branched camellia is best incorporated into a mixed woodland border.
