CAMELLIA 'Frost Prince'

Image of Camellia 'Frost Prince'

Gerald L. Klingaman

Family

Theaceae

Botanical Name

CAMELLIA 'Frost Prince'

Plant Common Name

Frost Prince Camellia, Hybrid Camellia

General Description

The camellia 'Frost Prince' bears numerous purplish-pink, single to semi-double flowers in late autumn. The slightly ruffled petals surround a central starburst of yellow stamens. This hybrid of Camellia hiemalis 'Shishi-gashira' and C. oleifera 'Plain Jane' is one of many hardy camellias developed by William L. Ackerman of the United States National Arboretum in Washington, DC. Ackerman crossed the hardy Chinese species C. oleifera with tender camellias to produce a group of beautiful and tough hybrids.

This medium to large, rounded shrub has dark green, oval leaves that are smaller and daintier than those of most other camellias. The leaves have a semi-glossy surface and sawtooth edges.

Plant this hardy evergreen shrub in moist, well-drained, acidic soil and partial shade. Shelter it from strong winter sun and wind. It makes a wonderful plant for an east-facing exposure in areas such as Boston that are too cold for other camellias. Use it in a Japanese or Chinese garden, a shrub border, or a patio planting.
