Family

Theaceae

Botanical Name

CAMELLIA japonica 'Brenda Beach'

Plant Common Name

Brenda Beach Camellia, Camellia, Japanese Camellia

General Description

The large semi-double blooms of 'Brenda Beach' are blush-pink with medium-pink flecks and streaks. This camellia was selected by Miles A. Beach of Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina, in 1991, 9 years after it originated as a chance seedling. It is one of thousands of named cultivars and hybrids of Camellia japonica, a broadleaf evergreen shrub that has long been grown and treasured in its native East Asia.

This relatively fast-growing camellia has upright, gray-barked branches and oval, glossy, dark green leaves with serrated edges. It flowers in late winter and early spring, midway to late in the Camellia japonica bloom season. Each bloom has 18 petals, 8 "petaloids," and a central cluster of pinkish-white stamens with golden anthers.

Camellia japonica cultivars prefer dappled sun but will tolerate full sun once established. The soil should be moist, well-drained, and non-alkaline. Shelter them from harsh winter sun and winds, and apply mulch to keep the roots cool and moist. Regular irrigation and applications of fertilizer promote optimal growth and flowering. Prune lightly (if necessary) in early spring, before next year's flower buds form. Camellia japonica cultivars are well suited for foundation plantings, mixed borders, cool greenhouses, and large containers. Their large waxy flowers are excellent for cutting.
