Plant Common Name
Camellia, Glen 40 Camellia, Japanese Camellia
General Description
A tried-and-true camellia cultivar, ‘Glen 40’ is a slow-growing, medium to large shrub with an upright to rounded form. From mid to late winter, its medium to large, double, deep rosy-red flowers open from rounded buds. This shrub has year-round interest due to its glossy dark-green leaves and smooth gray bark. The parent species is native to East Asia.
This evergreen shrub has ascending branches and oval, glossy, dark-green leaves with weakly toothed edges. The many-petaled, "rose-form" blooms appear in the middle of the Camellia japonica flowering season. The International Camellia Society considers 'Glen 40' to be synonymous with 'Coquettii', which originated in France in the early nineteenth century.
Camellia japonica cultivars prefer dappled sun but will tolerate full sun once established. The soil should be moist, well-drained, and non-alkaline. Shelter them from harsh winter sun and winds, and apply mulch to keep the roots cool and moist. Regular irrigation and applications of fertilizer promote optimal growth and flowering. Prune lightly (if necessary) in early spring, before next year's flower buds form. This compact Camellia japonica cultivar is well suited for foundation plantings, mixed borders, greenhouses, and large containers. It also can be used as a houseplant. Its waxy flowers are excellent for cutting.
