Family

Theaceae

Botanical Name

CAMELLIA 'Winter's Charm'

Plant Common Name

Hybrid Camellia, Winter's Charm Camellia

General Description

Camellias are tender evergreen shrubs much prized in warm climates for their abundant, showy flowers, but also their leaves, shapes, and longevity. This one, ‘Winter’s Charm,’ is among the hardiest of all. It is a spreading, dense plant with small, glossy, green leaves and lavender-pink peony-like flowers in late fall to early winter. The flowers have one or two ranks of broad petals and a prominent center of petaloids (small petals) and yellow stamens. Prune for shape and size as needed, but only right after the end of flowering. New buds for the next year will form afterward.

Like most camellias, ‘Winter's Charm’ prefers neutral to acidic, well-drained soil, grows best in partial shade, especially in areas with hot summers, and needs watering in a summer dry spell or it may drop its buds. Mulch this plant to help keep the roots cool and moist. Use it as a feature plant in mixed borders, along a foundation, or as a specimen for small spaces and yards. To avoid the drying of leaves and buds in winter, plant it in a sheltered spot.
