Family

Theaceae

Botanical Name

CAMELLIA x williamsii 'Taylor's Perfection'

Plant Common Name

Taylor's Perfection Camellia, William's Camellia

General Description

The camellia 'Taylor's Perfection' produces large, semi-double, light-pink flowers from early winter into spring. This large, rounded, broadleaf evergreen shrub has upright, gray-barked branches and oval, glossy, medium-green leaves. It is one of many named selections of Camellia × williamsii, the hybrid between Camellia japonica and Camellia saluenensis. The first Camellia × williamsii cultivars were developed by J. C. Williams of Caerhays Castle in Cornwall in the early 1920s.

Camellias prosper in partial shade and evenly moist, fertile, non-alkaline soil. Mulch them to keep the roots cool and moist. Their evergreen leaves and tender flower buds may suffer from sunscald and wind desiccation in winter, so avoid planting them in highly exposed areas. Prune them lightly for shape and size immediately after they finish blooming. New buds for the next year will form afterward. Often employed as specimen plants, they also work well in hedges, foundation plantings, and mixed borders.
