CAMPANULA cochlearifolia 'Bavaria Blue'
Bavaria Blue Bellflower, Bellflower, Fairies' Thimbles
‘Bavaria Blue’ is a selection of fairies' thimbles, a bellflower species native to alpine regions of Europe. This low-growing perennial forms rosettes of small, rounded, toothed, heart-shaped leaves which are topped with a flurry of small, nodding, thimble-shaped flowers of vivid sky blue. The dainty but prolific blossoms are held singly atop numerous, short, wiry stems, and bloom in late spring, continuing well into summer where temperatures are cool.
This diminutive mountain beauty requires afternoon shade to all-day filtered shade, and moist but well-drained soil. Blooming best where summers are cool, it offers vigorous growth where happy, and tends self-sow. If desired, faded flowers may be sheared back following bloom to prevent reseeding and to maintain a neat appearance. ‘Bavaria Blue’ is a charming addition to rock gardens and alpine troughs, and is ideal planted between paving stones or tumbling from crevices in stone walls.
