General Description

Italian Bellflower is a trailing tender perennial grown for its abundant flowers that look like falling stars. But due to its limited hardiness, it is usually grown as an annual. The upward facing blue, purple, and white flowers bloom all summer on small heart-shaped, light green leaves. As its name suggests, the Italian bellflower is native to Italy where it thrives in full to partial sun.

Grow Italian bellflower in moist but well-drained, fertile soil. Shear the plant after the flowers have faded to encourage continued bloom. Cut the dead stems down to the base where it is hardy before the winter. The Italian bellflower is spectacular in hanging baskets, on top of walls, and alpine gardens. It makes a good groundcover for small areas in mild winter climates. Or, keep it inside in cold winter regions to enjoy the next spring.
