Family

Campanulaceae

Botanical Name

CAMPANULA persicifolia

Plant Common Name

Peachleaf Bellflower

General Description

The pretty blooms of this tried and true early perennial offer old-fashioned elegance to perennial gardens.

Peachleaf bellflower is a rhizomatous perennial originating from Russia, Asia and Eastern Europe. It forms spreading rosettes of lance-shaped leaves that give rise to tall leafy stems in early summer. The willowy stems are lined with large, open, bell-shaped blooms of white, pink or lavender-blue. These are typically single, though double-flowered varieties are available. Deadheading will encourage plants to rebloom, but fewer flowers are produced the second time around.

This bellflower grows nicely in sites with full to partial sun and moist, well-drained soil. Later in the season it offers little ornamental value, so it’s best planted with annuals and perennials that are pretty in late summer and fall. This old-fashioned perennial is ideal for cottage gardens and sunny perennial borders. Its flowers are also good for cutting. The double white ‘Boule de Neige’ and palest blue ‘Telham Beauty’ are two particularly nice selections.
