General Description

The spotted bellflower is an enthusiastic, rhizomatous, clump-forming perennial grown for its charming combination of drooping pink bells with rose-colored inside freckles and greenish-burgundy heart-shaped leaves. Native to Japan, Plum Wine spotted bellflower blooms from late spring though the summer, often reblooming until frost. The flowers are held just above the foliage on wiry stems. The show continues in the winter when the evergreen leaves turn red.

Grow this bellflower in full sun, but provide partial shade in hotter regions. It needs fertile, well drained, slightly acidic soil that is allowed to dry between waterings. Plum wine makes an unusually ornamental groundcover in woodland gardens.
