CAMPANULA punctata

Jessie Keith

Family

Campanulaceae

Botanical Name

CAMPANULA punctata

Plant Common Name

Spotted Bellflower

General Description

Arguably this bellflower has some of the most striking blooms of any other Campanula. A native of northeastern Asia, spotted bellflower is a clump-forming, rhizomatous perennial with medium green, lance-shaped leaves and dark-colored stems. In late spring to summer it puts forth large, drooping, bell-shaped flowers. These are generally ivory freckled with dusty rose-pink (the name "punctata" means spotted) and have hairy interiors. There are several cultivars available such as the double ivory-flowered 'Wedding Bells' and dark plum-flowered 'Plum Wine.'

Spotted bellflower nneds full to partial sun and fertile garden loam with average drainage. Often considered invasive, it will form a mat of many, clump-forming plants that are best allowed to carpet the soil under woody shrubs (not growing among other perennials in a border). It requires division every two to three years.
