Chinese Trumpet Creeper, Chinese Trumpet Vine
Chinese trumpet creeper is a vigorous deciduous woody vine with trumpet-shaped flowers in late summer. This China native has attractive glossy dark green leaves. The large dark orange to red flowers form on stem tips and dangle, attracting hummingbirds.
Chinese trumpet creeper is not too difficult to grow. It will succeed in average garden soils that are freely draining but stay moist, and will adapt and grow even in fairly poor soil and in compacted or small pockets of ground. For maximum flowering, full to partial sun is needed, but this vine will grow in all but the deepest of shade. This vine becomes heavy and needs a strong support. It can collapse to the ground under its own weight and will overwhelm and shade out a small tree. Use it on a large and sturdy arbor or trellis or on a building wall with support cabling. The cultivar 'Morning Calm' has apricot or peach-colored flowers.
Chinese trumpet creeper is not as vigorous as its cousin, the North American native trumpet vine (Campsis radicans).
