Family

Cannaceae

Botanical Name

CANNA 'City of Portland'

Plant Common Name

Canna, Canna Lily, City of Portland Canna

General Description

A tropical-looking perennial with fleshy rhizomes (underground stems), ‘City of Portland’ canna is notable for its large, upright green leaves and long season of bloom. The flowers are pink and appear on stout stems above the leaves, opening in succession from a cluster of buds and continuing from spring into autumn. Cut spent stems before they make seeds to encourage the growth of new stems.

The rhizome of cannas transplant and divide easily. In temperate zones, they may be dug and brought into a cool, dry garage or basement to overwinter and then planted again in spring after the last frost date. In milder areas, the rhizomes are hardy in the ground over winter and new leaves emerge in late spring.

Cannas are amazingly adaptable, growing on almost any soil. They prefer full sun and rich, moist to wet soil but can be surprisingly drought tolerant if faced with dry weather. Use ‘City of Portland’ in containers and waterside gardens or as bold focal points in a bed or border. Though tolerant of wet soils, it will not tolerate deep standing water.
