General Description
Canna is an easy-to-grow, tropical to sub-tropical herbaceous plant that may be grown as a perennial in tropical regions or tender perennial in temperate regions. The dwarf 'Jamboree Yellow Spot' was introduced by Ball Seed Company and has large, showy, lily-like flowers of yellow with orange-red spots and markings. These play beautifully against its bold dark green leaves. This vigorous, floriferous variety is also resistant to leaf roller insects, which deform Canna foliage.
The beautiful and adaptable Canna prefers full sun and rich moist or wet soil, but if faced with a bout of dry weather it is surprisingly drought tolerant. Where not hardy, the rhizomes can be dug and brought into a cool, dry garage or basement to overwinter. These should be planted again in spring after the threat of frost has past. Plant to a depth twice the thickness of the rhizome and be sure the protruding "eyes" along the thick roots face upwards.
Bold foliage and bright flowers make this an easy ornamental to design with. It looks great in containers, waterside gardens or large beds and borders. Though tolerant of wet soils, Canna will not survive in deep standing water.
