General Description
Cannas are easy-to-grow, tropical to sub-tropical herbaceous plants that originate from tropical North, Central and South America. There are approximately 50 species and hundreds of hybrid cultivars.
Grown as perennials or tender perennials, these ornamentals offer bold, often colorful, foliage and showy lily-like flowers that come in shades of red, yellow, orange, salmon, pink or rose. The flowers appear in clusters atop stiff upright stems and attract hummingbirds. Selections like the wonderfully showy ‘Striata’, with its yellow and green striped foliage and tangerine flowers, help illustrate why these are popular ornamentals. Some species, like the enormous bold-leaved Canna musifolia are also highly desirable ornamentals.
Cannas are amazingly adaptable. They prefer full sun to partial sun and rich moist to wet soil but can be surprisingly drought tolerant if faced with a bout of dry weather. Plants are borne from thick fleshy rhizomes that transplant and divide easily. In temperate zones, they may be dug and brought into a cool, dry garage or basement to overwinter and then planted again in spring after the last frost date.
Use these in containers, waterside gardens or as focal points in any bed or border. Though tolerant of wet soils, they will not tolerate deep standing water.
