CANNA (LIBERTY™ SERIES)

Family

Cannaceae

Botanical Name

CANNA( LIBERTY™ SERIES)

Plant Common Name

Canna, Canna Lily

General Description

Cannas are easy-to-grow, tropical to sub-tropical herbaceous plants. Most species originate from tropical America, but almost all cultivated varieties are hybrids. Where hardy, they are grown as perennials and in colder regions they are commonly grown as vigorous tender perennials.

The dwarf members of the Liberty™ Series were bred by Jack Roberson of Grain Valley, Missouri. The vigorous, fast-growing plants are resistance to heat, rhizome rot and leaf roller worms. They come in an array of colors including orange, yellow and pink. Their leaves offer a bold texture to the garden, and their colorful, almost lily-like blossoms attract insect pollinators and hummingbirds.

These garden favorites are borne from thick, fleshy rhizomes that transplant and divide easily. In temperate zones, they may be dug and brought into a cool, dry garage or basement to over winter and then planted again in spring after the last frost date.

Most cannas are amazingly adaptable. Plants prefer full sun and rich moist to wet soil but can be surprisingly drought tolerant if faced with a bout of dry weather. Use these in containers, waterside gardens or in any bed or border. Though tolerant of wet soils, they will not tolerate deep standing water.
