Plant Common Name
Canna, Tropicanna Black Canna, Tropicanna™ Black Canna
General Description
Dark, tropical-looking foliage makes this Canna a superior selection for dramatic planting design.
Cannas are easy-to-grow, large, tropical to sub-tropical herbaceous plants. Most species originate from tropical America, but almost all cultivated varieties are hybrids. Where hardy, they are grown as perennials and in colder regions they are commonly grown as vigorous tender perennials,
The exciting Tropicanna™ Black features very dark purple, nearly black leaves that fade slightly as they age. It blooms from midsummer to frost but may flower nearly year around in exceptionally mild climates. Its exotic looking flowers have lily-like orange-red petals. Their leaves offer a course texture to the garden, and their colorful blossoms attract insect pollinators and hummingbirds.
Canna's thick fleshy rhizomes transplant and divide easily. In temperate zones, they may be dug and brought into a cool, dry garage or basement to over winter and then planted again in spring after the last frost date.
Canna is amazingly adaptable. Plants prefer full sun and rich moist to wet soil but can be surprisingly drought tolerant if faced with a bout of dry weather. Use these in containers, waterside gardens or as focal points in any bed or border. Though tolerant of wet soils, they will not tolerate deep standing water.
Tropicanna™ Black will offer fabulous color to drab gardens with excessive green foliage. It is coveted by modern garden designers who feature it in beds, containers and specimen plants.
