Cannaceae
Botanical Name
CANNA 'Rosemund Coles'
Plant Common Name
Canna, Canna Lily, Rosemund Coles Canna
General Description
A tropical-looking perennial, ‘Rosemund Coles’ is notable for its flower color, a rich orange-red thinly edged in yellow, with the reverse of the petals all yellow. It grows as a clump of upright green leaves, unfurling from a rising stem eventually topped by clusters of tapered flower buds that open in succession from spring into autumn. Prune spent stems to the highest leaf before the spent flowers make seeds to encourage the growth of new stems and prolong flowering.
Native to South and Central America, cannas are grown as annuals in temperate zones. Their rhizomes (fleshy underground stems) are dug in autumn and brought into a cool, dry garage or basement and then planted in spring after the last frost date. In milder climates, the rhizomes are hardy in the ground over winter and new leaves emerge in late spring. The rhizomes transplant and divide easily any time of year. They also spread on their own by branching, so one plant eventually becomes a cluster of many plants.
Cannas are amazingly adaptable, growing on almost any soil. They grow and flower best in full sun and rich, moist to wet soil but can be surprisingly drought tolerant if faced with dry weather. With its dwarf size ‘Roblibwat’ is versatile and suited for small spots and small yards. Use it in containers, waterside gardens, shallow ponds, massed as a groundcover, or as bold focal points in a bed or border. Though tolerant of wet soils and shallow water, it does not tolerate deep, standing water.
