Botanical Name
CANNA 'Stuttgart'
Plant Common Name
Canna, Canna Lily, Stuttgart Canna
General Description
A flamboyant, tall tropical perennial, ‘Stuttgart’ canna stands out for the vivid variegation of its large, lance-shaped leaves, not its modest apricot flowers. The leaves are colored in curving sweeps between the veins in pale green, dusty green and dark green. The plant, like all cannas, grows as a clump of upright leaves, unfurling from a rising stem eventually topped by clusters of tapered flower buds that open in succession from spring into autumn. Prune spent stems to the highest leaf before the spent flowers make seeds to encourage the growth of new stems and prolong flowering.
Native to South and Central America, cannas are grown as annuals in temperate zones. Their rhizomes (fleshy underground stems) are dug in autumn and brought into a cool, dry garage or basement and then planted in spring after the last frost date. In milder climates, the rhizomes are hardy in the ground over winter and new leaves emerge in late spring. The rhizomes transplant and divide easily any time of year. They also spread on their own by branching, so one plant eventually becomes a cluster of many plants.
Cannas are amazingly adaptable, growing on almost any soil. Plant ‘Stuttgart’ in partial shade to protect the leaves from scorching. Given its height and coloration, use ‘Stuttgart’ for an accent or specimen, planted in waterside gardens, shallow ponds, or a bed or border. Though tolerant of wet soils and shallow water, it does not tolerate deep, standing water
