CANNA (TROPICAL SERIES)

Family

Cannaceae

Botanical Name

CANNA( TROPICAL SERIES)

Plant Common Name

Canna, Canna Lily

General Description

Cannas are easy-to-grow, large, tropical to sub-tropical herbaceous plants. Most species originate from tropical America, but almost all cultivated varieties are hybrids. Where hardy, they are grown as perennials and in colder regions they are commonly grown as vigorous tender perennials,

Members of the Tropical Series have large, medium green leaves and a dwarfed mature size. There are several cultivars in this series with variable flower colors to include red, rose, salmon, white and yellow. Their leaves offer a course texture to the garden, and their colorful almost lily-like blossoms attract insect pollinators and hummingbirds.

Canna's thick fleshy rhizomes transplant and divide easily. In temperate zones, they may be dug and brought into a cool, dry garage or basement to over winter and then planted again in spring after the last frost date.

Canna is amazingly adaptable. Plants prefer full sun and rich moist to wet soil but can be surprisingly drought tolerant if faced with a bout of dry weather. Use these in containers, waterside gardens or as focal points in any bed or border. Though tolerant of wet soils, they will not tolerate deep standing water. Tropical Series cultivars grow true from seed and will flower within the first growing season.
