CANNA 'Tropical Yellow'( TROPICAL SERIES)
Plant Common Name
Canna, Canna Lily, Tropical Yellow Canna
General Description
Canna is an easy-to-grow, tropical to sub-tropical herbaceous plant. Most species originate from tropical America, but almost all cultivated varieties are hybrids. Where hardy, it is grown as an evergreen perennial and in colder regions it is revered as a vigorous tender perennial.
The dwarf cultivar 'Tropical Yellow' is known for its large bright yellow flowers touched with peachy pink spots, medium green foliage and compact mature size. Its bold leaves offer a course texture to the garden, and its colorful almost lily-like blossoms attract insect pollinators and hummingbirds.
All Canna have thick fleshy rhizomes that transplant and divide easily. In temperate zones, they may be dug and brought into a cool, dry garage or basement to overwinter and then planted again in spring after the last frost date.
Cannas are amazingly adaptable. They prefer full sun and rich moist to wet soil but are surprisingly drought tolerant if faced with a bout of dry weather.
Use 'Tropical Yellow' in containers, mixed borders or waterside plantings. Though tolerant of wet soils, it will not tolerate deep standing water. Members of the Tropical Series grow true from seed and will flower in the first growing season.
