Family

Cannaceae

Botanical Name

CANNA 'Yellow King Humbert'

Plant Common Name

Canna, Canna Lily, Yellow Humbert Canna

General Description

Brilliant flowers with yellow outer petals spotted with orange and brilliant orangish red inner petals decorate 'Yellow King Humbert' in the heat of summer. The vibrant flowers of this compact cultivar contrast nicely with its waxy green leaves that are sometimes touched with purple.

Cannas are easy-to-grow, tropical to sub-tropical, herbaceous or evergreen plants that may be grown as perennials in tropical regions or tender perennials in temperate regions. They are borne from thick fleshy rhizomes that are easy to transplant and divide. These give rise to large leaves and tall upright stems topped with lily-like flowers. Compact cultivars, like ‘Yellow King Humbert’ are bushier in appearance than tall cultivars.

These amazingly adaptable plants prefer full sun and rich moist to wet soil, but if faced with a bout of dry weather they are also surprisingly drought tolerant. Where not hardy, their rhizomes can be dug and brought into a cool, dry garage or basement to overwinter. The rhizomes should be planted again in spring after the threat of frost has past. Plant to a depth twice the thickness of the rhizome and be sure the protruding "eyes" along the thick roots are facing upward. They look great in containers, waterside gardens or large beds and borders. Though tolerant of wet soils, plants will not survive in deep standing water.

This cultivar is sold under many other names to include ‘Cleopatra’, ‘Yellow Humbert’, ‘Harlequin’ and ‘Queen Helena’ to name a few.
