General Description

Delighting with impatiens-like flowers atop a tough, heat and drought tolerant, low maintenance plant, the sterile (not producing seeds) 'Kitajima Angel Tutu' has ruffled white-edged pink blossoms. A tropical evergreen shrub that is popularly grown as a tender annual, this is a compact sterile selection developed in Japan and now licensed by and being distributed by PlantHaven, Inc.; it is only made through cuttings.

It blooms continuously and bears showy, radial, five-petaled blooms of pink with a light pink to white petal edge. The petals overlap and fold upwards, creating an uniquely frilly flower, almost wild rose-like. The leaves are a glossy dark green and clothe the compact but well-branched stems. If grown in frost-free areas the stems become woody and light brown, becoming a small shrub.

Hybrid vinca grows best in sites with full to partial sun and poor to fertile, friable, well-drained soils, including those near the seashore. This tough ornamental can be used as a bedding annual. In tropical regions, where it will become a mounded semi-woody shrub, it can be planted in mixed shrub borders or as a specimen or foundation plant. Be aware that 'Katajima Angel Tutu' deteriorates and rots in poorly drained or very heavy soils and it will not produce seeds. This allows it to be used much more freely in tropical areas without the nuisance of re-seeding like other Madagascar periwinkles.
