General Description

The Solar Blueberry periwinkle delights with lavender-blue-tinted pink, impatiens-like flowers atop a tough, heat and drought tolerant, low maintenance plant. A tropical evergreen shrub that is popularly grown as a tender annual, it is native to the island of Madagascar off the southeastern coast of Africa.

The 'Solar Blueberry' selection was developed to be earlier-flowering and better performing in the cooler initial days of late spring and summer. It also has good tolerance to the intense summer heat and higher humidity in tropic areas and thus has fewer issues with rot and leaf fungi. It's also well suited to the average home garden where partial shade or more frequent irrigation may normally cause leaves to brown. Solar Blueberry periwinkle blooms continuously and bears showy, radial, overlapping petal blooms of pink with noticeable casts of lavender and blue. Flower centers are tiny rosy red eyes.

Periwinkle grows best in sites with full to partial sun and poor to fertile, friable, well-drained soils, including those near the seashore and in confined containerized plantings. This tough ornamental can be used as a bedding annual or allowed to rejuvenate as a reseeding perennial. In tropical regions, where it will become a mounded semi-woody shrub, it can be planted in mixed shrub borders or as a specimen or foundation plant. Madagascar periwinkle deteriorates and rots in poorly drained or very heavy soils. It will reseed itself into the landscape, excelling in sunny, dry areas of the landscape, potentially being invasive in certain regions.
